Best mobile phone free gift deals

Samsung Galaxy Buds Live.
Three currently offer free Samsung Galaxy Buds Live with Android phones on unlimited data plans.

Let’s begin our guide.

In this part, we’ve explained which UK mobile providers offer phone contracts with free gifts.

We’ve looked at which phones come with freebies, and whether or not each free gift is good value for money.

1. Three Big Tech Giveaway

Three currently offer a number of free gifts for mobile customers who purchase an unlimited data plan.

They call this promotion the “Big Tech Giveaway”. Essentially, when you buy a new mobile on a pay monthly contract with unlimited data, you get to choose a free gift.

You currently get the choice of either Samsung Galaxy Buds, Beats by Dre Powerbeats Pro wireless earbuds, a FitBit Versa 3 Smart Watch, or a JBL Xtreme 3 portable Bluetooth speaker. Sometimes, one or more of these items might not be in stock, so you’ll have to be quick to choose the free gift you want.

Each of these items typically sells for about £150-£250, so you get a decent amount of value with Three’s free gifts.

The Three Big Tech Giveaway is available with nearly every Android phone that Three sells, but not with their Apple iPhone offers unfortunately. You can see the full list of qualifying handsets here.

Overall, if you’re looking for gadgets like Bluetooth speakers or wireless earbuds free of cost with a new phone, Three’s deals are probably the best choice at the moment, provided you want an Android phone.

2.  EE Smart Benefits

EE give you what they call “Smart Benefits” with some of their pay monthly contracts. These Smart Benefits include:

  • Apple Music
  • Apple TV+ (only on iPhone deals)
  • Apple Arcade (add-free games with no in-app purchases, only on iPhone deals)
  • BT Sport Ultimate
  • EE Roam Further (use your data, texts and minutes in more international locations)
  • EE VIdeo Data Pass (use your data to watch videos without affecting your allowance)
  • Britbox (only on Android deals)
  • Amazon Prime Video (only on Android deals)

Depending on your phone data plan, you can choose a certain number of Smart Benefits to use each month:

  • Android phones like the Samsung Galaxy A71 and Google Pixel 4a come with 1 smart benefit per month
  • iPhones on limited data plans come with 1 smart benefit per month
  • iPhones on unlimited data plans come with 3 smart benefits per month

We really like the range of phone deals with freebies that EE offer. Although there aren’t any tech gadgets available, the range of free gift choices you have are great – and you can even swap them out at each billing cycle. This means you can binge Amazon Prime for a month, then swap it out for the Champion’s League finals on BT Sport.

However, it’s a bit disappointing to see that only one Smart Benefit is available with Android phones. Even if you buy the latest Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G from EE, you’ll only get one Smart Benefit.

3. O2 Free Audible/Amazon Prime/Disney+/Apple Music + more

Depending on the contract you go for, O2 currently offers a range of streaming free gifts with their pay monthly mobile deals.

With their Android phones on deals with 20GB or more data, you get a choice of three months of either Amazon Prime Video, Amazon Music, Audible, Cafeyn, MelodyVR, Calm, McAfee, or Disney+. With their unlimited data deals, this goes up to 6 months, and you also get 6 months of free Apple Music.

With O2 Apple iPhone deals, you get all of the above, plus a year of Apple TV+.

O2 also offer decent cashback rewards when you trade in an old mobile phone. For example, if you trade in your Apple iPhone, you can get up to £400 back from O2, making the process of upgrading very easy.

Although O2 don’t offer any tech gadgets with their mobile phone deals, they offer great value if you love streaming services and eBooks.

Just be aware that no matter which gift you choose, the service will renew automatically at the end of the 3 or 6 month free period. Therefore, you need to be careful to cancel the service at the end unless you’d like to begin paying money for it.

4. Vodafone Free Entertainment for 24 Months

Vodafone offer a free streaming service deal with most of their phones. You’ll see this available once you select a phone and go to look at the different data packages available.

Essentially, some of Vodafone’s contracts come with “Entertainment”. This means that you can get either YouTube Premium, Amazon Prime Video, or Spotify free for 24 months.

Vodafone Entertainment is available with all of their new phones on a pay monthly contract. This includes Google Pixel, Apple iPhone, and Samsung Galaxy phones.

The issue with Vodafone Entertainment is sometimes it’s not actually free – it’s just discounted. For example, you might see a 25GB deal online for the cost of £19 upfront and £43 per month. Meanwhile, the same plan with Entertainment added is £49 per month with a £19 upfront cost.

In this case, the added bonus isn’t free, but you’re still saving money. The price of YouTube Premium is £11.99 per month, but the contract costs £6 per month more, so you save £5.99. Therefore, Vodafone Entertainment is worth looking at if you know you’re always going to use Amazon Prime, YouTube Premium, or Spotify, and you know you can save money by adding the service to your phone contract.

Mobile phone deals with free gifts: explained

Woman using a smartphone.

In this part, we’ll explain more about how mobile plans with free gifts work, and discuss whether or not they’re good value for money.

Types of free gifts available with phone contracts

Mobile phone networks offer a range of different freebies with their phones to try and increase sales. Here are some of the most common add-ons you can choose from.

  • Free subscriptions to a streaming service, such as Netflix, BT Sport, Amazon Prime, or Spotify.
  • Cashback.
  • Tech gadgets, such as Bluetooth speakers, headphones and other accessories, and even smart TVs.
  • Games consoles, such as a Playstation or Xbox.
  • Other add-ons, such as extended international roaming – EE for example allow you to choose a different free gift each month. One of the benefits you can swap in is extended international roaming.

With this last point, many mobile networks also allow you to get discounts on broadband if you use their service. For example, if you use BT Mobile, you can get £5 per month off your phone if you also use BT Broadband.

What mobile phone providers offer free gifts?

iPhone connected to the GiffGaff network.

The following networks generally offer phone and free gift deals:

  • Three
  • Vodafone
  • EE
  • O2
  • GiffGaff – generally has a cashback or free gift promotion running – you can view their current deals here

Are phone deals with free gifts any good?

In general, free gifts offered with phone deals are not actually free. You’ll often pay a small amount more per month for a phone deal that includes a free gift, compared with an identical deal with no free gift.

However, although there are hidden costs to free gifts, it can still make sense to pay a higher monthly cost for a free gift, as long as you’ll get good use out of it.

Here are some examples of when it makes sense to go for a mobile phone plan with a free gift.

  • A provider offers some of its old iPhone stock with a pair of free Bluetooth headphones, valued at about £100. The cost of the 24 month contract is only £2 more per month than without the free gift. You claim the headphones and sell them for £100, and pay £48 more for the phone over the 24 month contract duration. In total, you save £52 over two years.
  • EE offers one of their Smart Benefits with new iPhones on a 100GB data deal. This costs £3 more per month compared to the same deal without the Smart Benefit. You use the Smart Benefit on Amazon Prime, which you already subscribe to at a cost of £8 per month. You save £4 per month by going for the plan with a Smart Benefit.

Therefore, it often makes sense to go for phone plans with free gifts, even if they’re not technically “free” as such. As a customer though, you have to ensure that you’ll get good value for money from the free gift. Otherwise, it might just be better to look at mobile phones that don’t come with free gifts.

How do I claim my free gift?

Woman typing on laptop.

Generally, you have to wait for delivery of the phone to your house before you can claim the free gifts.

Most providers will send you a text message within 30 days of you signing the contract and becoming a customer, containing a link to the network website. There, you can choose the free gift that you’d like, if you have a choice, and they will initiate delivery of your item or service.

The same is true even if you don’t get a choice of free gift. You will have to go to the network’s website and claim the gift in order for them to begin the delivery process.

If switching network, ensure that this process is completed before claiming your free gifts.

What happens if I return the phone – do I give the free gift back as well?

The reason that it takes so long to receive your free gift after you buy a new mobile is so that the device can no longer be returned.

Most large UK mobile networks have a 14-day return policy. You can send your phone back for a refund within 2 weeks, as long as it has not been used. However, most providers will only allow you to claim your gift within 14-30 days after signing the contract.

Therefore, you won’t be able to return the free gift once you receive it, nor will you be able to return the phone. By the time the gift arrives, the return period will have ended.

Instead, you’ll need to look at other phone deals. Most providers will allow you to exchange your phone if you’ve changed your mind after 14 days, rather than returning it for a full refund of the upfront cost.

Can you get free gifts with SIM only phone deals?

SIM card from Three.

Generally, you can’t get a free gift with SIM only deals.

You might be able to get bonus data if a given network is running a promotion, but it’s very rare for SIM plans to come with proper gifts, such as access to streaming services, headphones, TVs, or gaming consoles.
